John is a sociopath.

That said, John is aware of this and takes steps to keep his own tendencies in line as he does not want to lose control of his baser instincts and hurt anyone. He has studied the psychology of serial killers extensively not because he admires them or wants to be like them but so that he can understand and take steps against his own psychosis, see where these people (or their lives) went wrong to turn them on that path and avoid their fate. As such, he has coping mechanisms. Some are better than others.
